Spotify Subscription Failed? Here’s How to Fix It & Recover Your Account

If you often encounter subscription payment failures or unexpected account locks on Spotify, this article compiles the most common issues and solutions to help you restore your listening experience quickly.

What to Do When a Subscription Fails

Subscription failures are usually caused by insufficient card balance, an expired card number, or the bank restricting international payments. Start by checking your card status to confirm sufficient funds and international transaction support.

If you’re using a credit card, try switching to a Visa or Mastercard. PayPal users can rebind a different account. If the failure persists, wait 1–2 hours before retrying to avoid triggering fraud detection from multiple rapid attempts.

How to Recover a Locked Account

Account locks often occur due to logins from unfamiliar locations or frequent device switches that trigger security measures. After seeing the “Your account has been locked” message, click the “Unlock” link in the email or app, then follow the prompts to verify your email or phone number.

If you don’t receive the verification email, check your spam folder, or use the “Recover account” feature on the Spotify website to reset your password. Avoid using third-party top-up services—they can easily lead to a permanent ban.

Handling Payment Error Messages

When you see the error “Payment method declined,” first delete the existing payment method and then add it again. Some banks require enabling “international card-not-present” transactions—a quick call to customer support can resolve this.

If you get a “Region mismatch” error, your Spotify account’s region differs from the card’s issuing region. You can use a VPN to switch to the matching region, or simply top up with a local gift card.

Common Family Plan Invitation Issues

When the family plan owner invites members, the member’s address must match the owner’s. If a member receives an invitation but cannot join, check that their account region matches the owner’s—if not, update it in the settings page.

Each family group can have up to 6 members, and you can only switch family groups once per year. If the invitation link expires, the owner can regenerate it from the “Subscription” page.
