Common ChatGPT Error Codes and How to Fix Them

Annoying error pop-ups on ChatGPT can be frustrating, whether it’s a white screen on the web version or an API failure. Most issues follow predictable patterns. Based on personal experience and official documentation, here are several high-frequency error codes, covering everything from network to account issues.

Network Errors: ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT & 429 Too Many Requests

If your browser shows "Connection timed out" or "ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT," first check if your local network is working, then rule out VPN or proxy issues. I’ve found that switching to global mode often resolves it immediately. For HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests), it means you’ve sent a high volume of requests in a short time—ChatGPT has rate limits for free accounts. Wait about one minute and retry, or check if any background script is repeatedly refreshing.

Account Authorization Errors: 401 Unauthorized & 403 Forbidden

If you keep seeing 401 after logging in, your login credentials or token may have expired. Simply re-login or clear your browser cookies and cache. 403 is more serious—your account may have triggered risk control, such as frequently switching IP addresses or logging in from unusual locations. In this case, don’t rush to change your password. Log out of all devices, wait 24 hours, then try logging in again—success rate is high.

Session Loading Failures: 500 Internal Server Error & 504 Gateway Timeout

500 Internal Server Error is usually a temporary glitch on OpenAI’s end. Check real-time status at status.openai.com. 504 Gateway Timeout often occurs during peak hours or when using an outdated client. Try a different browser or incognito mode to bypass it. If it persists, take a screenshot of the error and submit feedback.

Input/Output Issues: Content Filter & Model Limit Errors

Sometimes you input compliant content, but ChatGPT returns "Content filtered" or "Model refused to generate." This could mean your prompt triggered sensitive keywords, such as specific names or events. Try rephrasing with more neutral language, or break the input into smaller chunks. Also, if a single conversation becomes too long, the model may cut off the response—simply start a "New Chat" to fix it.

In short, most errors stem from network fluctuations or temporary rate limiting. Waiting a bit or clearing your environment usually resolves them. If none of the above works, submit a ticket via the official help center with a full screenshot and the time of the error—support will handle it much faster.
