OpenClaw Tutorial: A Complete Guide from Sign-Up to Account Switching

OpenClaw

OpenClaw is a powerful AI tool, but many beginners get stuck during sign-up, account binding, and switching between accounts. This hands-on tutorial covers every step to help you get started smoothly and avoid common pitfalls.

Registering Your OpenClaw Account

First, go to the OpenClaw official website and click the "Sign Up" button in the top-right corner. You can register with your email address or log in quickly using your Google or GitHub account.

If you choose email registration, we recommend using an email address you check regularly—because verification codes and notifications will be sent there. When setting your password, make sure it's at least 8 characters long and includes both letters and numbers, or the system will flag it as invalid.

After submitting, check your email inbox for a verification message and click the link to activate your account. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes. If you don't see the email, don't forget to check your spam folder.

Binding Your Email & Phone Number

Once logged in, go to the "Settings" page and find the "Account Security" section. Here you'll need to link your phone number—mainly for two-factor authentication and password recovery.

Click "Add Phone," select your country code, enter your phone number, and request the SMS verification code. Enter the code to activate the phone binding. Your email is already linked by default, but we recommend checking the "Email Preferences" to confirm your notification settings and avoid missing important updates.

If you plan to use OpenClaw's team collaboration features, you can also add a work email under "Organization" to make it easier for team members to share projects.

Tips for Switching Between Accounts

Many users need to manage multiple OpenClaw accounts—for example, a personal account and a work account. On the web or desktop app, click your profile icon in the top-left corner and select "Switch Account" to change quickly.

If you're using the desktop version, you can check "Remember Multiple Accounts" in settings so you don't have to re-enter your password each time you switch. Keep in mind that the free plan only allows one active session at a time—switching accounts will clear the previous session's data.

A handy trick: set a different color theme for each account. That way you can tell at a glance which account you're using and avoid sending messages from the wrong one.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

If you see "Email already exists" during registration, it means that email is already registered—try using the "Forgot Password" option to recover the account. If you don't receive the SMS verification code when binding your phone, first double-check the phone number, then wait 60 seconds before trying again. Sometimes carriers cause delays.

After switching accounts, you may notice some features aren't available—like missing chat history. That's because data is stored separately per account. You'll need to reload it manually by going to "Data Management" and syncing.

If you're having trouble logging in, check whether a VPN or proxy is enabled. OpenClaw may not be as stable in certain regions. Try disabling the proxy or switching to a different node.
