Claude Web Error Codes & Fixes: A Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Dealing with errors while using Claude for coding or document translation can be really frustrating—especially if you're new to AI tools. This article covers the most common error codes I've run into during daily use, each paired with a solution that actually works, so you can quickly resume your chat.

Error Code 401: Authentication Failed – Unable to Log In

I often get a 401 Unauthorized error after switching devices or clearing my browser cache. This usually happens when the login token expires or cookies are wiped. The fix is simple: log out of your account and log back in using your email or Google account. If that doesn't work, check whether your network environment has changed—like moving from home to a corporate network, which can trigger an IP shift. Wait a few minutes and try again; it usually resolves.

If the 401 error keeps popping up, go to your browser settings, find Claude's site data, manually clear cookies and cache, then log in again. I've also found that opening a private or incognito window can temporarily bypass the issue.

Error Code 429: Too Many Requests – Rate Limited

There was a time I kept asking questions on the same topic, and suddenly a 429 error popped up. This is Claude's rate-limiting mechanism to protect its servers—it means you're sending too many requests in a short period. The most direct solution is to stop, wait about 60 seconds to 2 minutes, then refresh the page and continue. If you're on the free plan, daily conversation limits can also trigger a 429 after you've used up your quota.

My personal approach: wait a few seconds after each question before sending the next one—don't spam the send button. If you need to work urgently, consider switching to Claude's API, but that requires a paid plan and separate quota configuration.

Conversation Interrupted or "Something went wrong" Error

After using Claude for about half an hour, I've often seen a "Something went wrong" message with all chat history lost. This is usually caused by memory overflow on the web page or network fluctuations. First, check that your internet connection is stable—for example, whether your Wi-Fi is dropping packets. Then force-refresh the page (Ctrl+F5), and it should recover. If you reconnect after a disconnect, Claude will rebuild the session, but previous content may be lost. I recommend manually copying important conversations as you go.

Browser extension conflicts can also trigger this error. After disabling AdBlock and Grammarly, I noticed the error frequency dropped significantly. If you have many extensions installed, try temporarily disabling them before accessing Claude.

Input Truncated or Empty Response Returned

Sometimes when I paste a long block of code or article, Claude replies with only half the content or gives a blank response. This error doesn't have a code number but is very common. The cause is that the single input exceeds Claude's context window limit. I suggest splitting long texts into smaller chunks and sending them in multiple rounds. For example, divide a paper into three parts, and each time tell Claude: "This is part one, please analyze this section first."

If you get an empty response, it may be because your question contains filtered sensitive words. Check whether it involves violent, illegal, or adult content, rephrase your question, and send it again.
