Spotify Tutorial: From Sign-Up to Switching Accounts Made Easy

Many beginners feel lost when first using Spotify—unsure how to sign up, link a payment method, or switch between accounts. This guide walks you through the entire process, helping you get started with ease.

Creating an Account: Use Your Phone Number or Email

Start by opening the Spotify website or downloading the app, then click "Sign Up." You can register with an email address or directly link your Google or Apple account. If you choose email, enter a valid email and set a password. Spotify will send a verification email—just click the link inside to complete the process.

We recommend using an email for registration, as it makes switching accounts easier later. When signing up, select a region like Hong Kong, the United States, or Japan. This way, when you subscribe to Premium, you’ll get access to the corresponding music library and pricing. Note: choosing a random region may cause payment issues or content restrictions.

Setting Up Payment: Family and Student Plans Made Simple

After registration, go to Settings and find "Subscriptions & Payments" to choose your plan. Whether you pick Individual, Family, or Student, you’ll need to link an international credit card or PayPal account. For users in China without a foreign currency card, virtual credit cards or trusted third-party payment services are options—but be cautious of scams.

Once linked, Spotify will charge a small verification fee (usually a few dollars), which is refunded within a few days. If you see "Your payment method was declined," check your card balance and make sure the billing address matches your registered region. For Family plans, you’ll also need to verify your address. Up to six people living at the same address can share a Family plan.

Switching Accounts: Managing Multiple Accounts Without Hassle

Spotify lets you switch accounts directly in the app. Tap your current profile picture at the top of Settings, select "Log Out," then enter another account’s credentials. If you have accounts in different regions (e.g., US and Japan), use separate emails for each and keep a record of your passwords.

Some users prefer third-party tools to manage multiple accounts, but Spotify doesn’t recommend this—frequent switching can trigger security flags and lead to account lockouts. The safest method is simply logging out and logging back in. It takes an extra step but keeps your accounts secure. Also, free accounts and Premium accounts can coexist; switching a free account to a Premium plan upgrades it automatically.
