ChatGPT Error Troubleshooting: Common Web Version Error Codes and Fixes

When using the ChatGPT web version, you may occasionally encounter error messages such as login freezes, request failures, or blank white screens. Most of these errors come with clear codes or symptoms, and understanding their root cause can help you resume your conversation faster. This article compiles several high-frequency error scenarios along with tested repair steps.

Login Captcha and Account Lockout Issues

Frequent “Incorrect captcha” or “Account temporarily locked” prompts during login are usually caused by multiple incorrect password attempts within a short time or an unstable network environment. First, check whether a VPN is enabled—some nodes can be flagged by OpenAI as abnormal traffic, triggering repeated captcha requests. Try disabling the proxy and logging in again, or switch to a residential IP node. If your account is locked, simply wait 15–30 minutes before retrying; no password reset is needed.

Request Timeout and Network Connection Failures

Suddenly seeing “Network Error” or “Request timed out” during a conversation is most likely due to local network fluctuations or DNS resolution issues. Try refreshing the page and checking your WiFi status, or clear the site cache in your browser settings (path: Settings → Privacy & Security → Clear browsing data, check “Cached images and files”). If the problem persists, manually changing your DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) usually resolves it.

Model Unavailable and “Something went wrong”

After clicking send, you see “Something went wrong. Please try again.” while the model version is not displayed in the bottom-left corner. This often indicates a temporary server glitch on ChatGPT’s side or a model reload. Wait 30 seconds and refresh the page. If the error code is 404 or 503, simply log out of your account and log back in. Additionally, free-tier users may encounter this more frequently during high server load—try again during off-peak hours.

Conversation Not Saving and History Loss

After logging in, the left-side conversation history disappears, or new chats fail to auto-save. This is usually related to an anomaly in the browser’s local storage. Press F12 to open Developer Tools, select the “Application” tab, locate “Local Storage,” right-click to delete all data under the relevant domain, then refresh the page. If you are using incognito or private browsing mode, you must close that mode for conversations to save properly.

The issues above are the most common errors found in the ChatGPT web version. In the vast majority of cases, refreshing, switching networks, or clearing your cache will resolve the problem—there is no need to repeatedly reinstall your browser. If the issue persists, try a different browser or device to log in and confirm whether it is an account-level restriction.
