Many ChatGPT users accumulate a long list of conversations but aren’t sure how to view, export, or clean them up. This step-by-step tutorial walks you through ChatGPT’s chat history management features on both web and mobile app, helping you work more efficiently. Whether you want to back up important chats or just tidy up your interface, this guide has you covered.
How to View ChatGPT Chat History
On the ChatGPT web version, the left sidebar lists all your past conversations in chronological order. Click any conversation title to quickly switch to it. If you have too many chats, use the search function: click the search box at the top of the sidebar and enter a keyword (e.g., “Python code”), and the system will filter the history to show only matching conversations. The mobile app works similarly — open the app and scroll down to see the “History” list, then tap to enter a chat.
Note that the free plan keeps roughly the last 30 days of conversation history (the exact duration may change with policy updates), while the Pro plan supports longer retention. If you can’t find an older conversation, try searching or check whether you manually deleted it.
How to Export ChatGPT Conversations
ChatGPT offers a built-in data export feature so you can back up your personal chat information. On the web version, click your profile picture or username in the bottom-left corner, select “Settings,” then go to the “Data Controls” tab. Find the “Export data” button and click it. ChatGPT will send an email with a download link to your registered email address. It usually takes a few minutes for the email to arrive. Click the link to download a JSON file containing all your conversations.
If you don’t see the email, check your spam folder or request a new export. The mobile app currently does not support direct exports, so it’s best to use a computer. The exported JSON file can be opened with a text editor, but it’s not very readable. You can import it into third-party tools (like the ChatGPT Exporter browser extension) to convert it into a more user-friendly format.
