Suddenly unable to log in to ChatGPT or seeing an error pop up mid-conversation? It can be frustrating, but this article covers several frequent issues—login failures, API request timeouts, and locked accounts—and walks you through the corresponding troubleshooting methods and fixes so you can handle these problems yourself.

Login Failure: Wrong Password & Missing Verification Code

The most common cause is entering the wrong password too many times or simply forgetting it. If you see “Invalid credentials,” first check your email inbox for a password reset email from OpenAI. If none is there, click “Forgot password” on the login page to reset it. Another common hurdle is not receiving the verification code—check your spam folder, or try switching to a Gmail or Outlook account. Some email providers based in China (e.g., QQ Mail, 163 Mail) may occasionally block these emails. An unstable VPN or proxy can also interrupt the login request, so try switching nodes or changing your Wi-Fi connection.

API Request Errors: 429 Rate Limits & 500 Server Errors

When calling the API, an HTTP 429 error means you’ve sent too many requests in a short period or your quota is exhausted. Free-tier users have a per-minute request limit—wait one minute and retry, or check the Usage page in your OpenAI account to see if your quota is depleted. For 500 or 502 server errors, OpenAI’s backend is usually experiencing a temporary issue. Go to status.openai.com for real-time status updates, and wait for OpenAI to fix it—no configuration changes are needed on your end. If you’re using a third-party client (e.g., OpenClaw), verify that your API key is valid and the Base URL is correct. Many “Connection refused” errors are caused by a misconfigured proxy address.

Account Lockout: Multiple Failed Logins & Suspicious Activity Triggers

If you enter the wrong password repeatedly or log in from a suspicious IP (for example, frequently switching country nodes), the system may temporarily lock your account and show an “Account locked” pop-up. Do not keep trying—wait 15–30 minutes before attempting again. If the lock lasts longer than an hour, submit a support ticket to OpenAI, explaining the situation and providing your registered email address. Usually, it gets resolved within half a day. To reduce the chance of being mistakenly flagged, use a fixed, common proxy node and avoid toggling global proxy settings frequently.
