Elon Musk recently disclosed on X that SpaceX has pulled "dozens" of top engineers from its two core projects—Starship and Starlink—to redirect significant efforts toward upgrading its AI chatbot Grok. This move marks SpaceX's full embrace of the AI field, speeding up competition with giants like OpenAI and Google.

Musk stated that the latest version, Grok 4.5, is already in private testing within Tesla and SpaceX. In his post, he wrote, "Thanks to top engineers from Starlink and Starship devoting most of their time to AI, the iteration speed of SpaceX's models and training toolchains is accelerating rapidly." According to the plan, SpaceX will release a brand-new foundational AI model trained from scratch every month for the remainder of the year, steadily improving Grok's performance.

This personnel shift is the latest example of Musk integrating resources across his companies. He previously restructured xAI, founded in 2023, leading to the departure of its last co-founder. Now, with SpaceX's engineering elite directly involved in AI model improvements, Musk appears to be leveraging the project management expertise from aerospace to gain a competitive edge in the AI race.

Analysis: Deploying top rocket and satellite engineers to AI development reflects Musk's aggressive cross-domain synergy. SpaceX's deep expertise in hardware engineering and system optimization could bring unique architectural efficiency to Grok. However, whether it can sustain its breakthrough in the talent-dense AI arena remains to be seen.
