Elon Musk recently announced that SpaceX has reassigned dozens of top engineers from its Starship and Starlink programs to the development team of its AI chatbot, Grok, in order to speed up model iterations. In a post on X, Musk wrote: “Thanks to some of the best engineers from Starship and Starlink shifting significant time to AI, SpaceX’s model and training toolchain optimization speed is improving dramatically.” This marks a further escalation in SpaceX’s investment in artificial intelligence.

Musk also disclosed that the latest version, Grok 4.5, has entered private testing within Tesla and SpaceX, and promised to release a brand-new model “trained from scratch” every month starting this year. Earlier this year, he conducted a major restructuring of his AI startup xAI, leading to several co-founders leaving. The transfer of aerospace engineering talent to AI projects is now seen by outside observers as a key signal that SpaceX is pivoting fully toward an AI-focused strategy.

Commentary: By funneling engineering expertise from the aerospace sector into AI development, SpaceX reflects Musk’s signature management style of pooling resources across his companies, while also revealing an urgent push to catch up with OpenAI and Google. If the promised monthly release cadence holds, it could meaningfully reshape the competitive landscape of the industry.
